Riot Act, Inc. is preparing to unveil not only a new production, but a new and exciting community collaboration with the goal of bringing different groups together while exploring themes of immigration and cultural identity.
No Roosters in the Desert, by Kara Hartzler, follows four women as they attempt to cross the border from Mexico to the United States, facing not only the unforgiving Arizona desert, but the hot-button cultural and social issues that are front and center in today’s society.
The production is being directed by guest director Luis Guerrero, who is drawing on his own experience as a Mexican immigrant to imbue the play with his personal insight while exploring challenging issues.
Beyond reaching out to the Hispanic community through organizations like the Latino Resource Center and El Puente, Riot Act is working through pARTners with students from Summit High School who are creating eight large-scale collage panels representing the American immigration experience through words, images and mixed-media techniques. Students from Kristie Anderson’s English class and Michelle Farrier’s art class are participating in the project.
The play will marry traditional storytelling with movement and visual art to create a unique and compelling experience that will both please the eye and challenge the mind.
As in past Riot Act productions, there will be multiple opportunities for talkback sessions with the cast and local experts following the performances.
Tickets are available in advance at the Riot Act website at https://riotactinc.org/box-office/, or at the door (cash or check only at door). Audience members will receive $2 off tickets with a dinner receipt from El Abuelito (same day only).
